What are dental fillings?
Sometimes due to tooth decay, wear, or breakage – dental fillings are needed. Dental fillings are used to fill cavities and repair the damage caused by the grinding of teeth.* At Riverside Dental, we offer only the best materials and the most sophisticated techniques to ensure longevity and durability.* During these visits, there are several procedures that may take place, depending on the specifics of your case.
What are the different kinds of fillings?
We provide composite resins and porcelain fillings. Composite resins are very common and are matched to the color of your surrounding teeth in order to create a seamless look.* After the material is mixed, it is placed directly into the cavity. These types of fillings are not generally suitable for large areas. They usually last about a decade.*
Porcelain fillings are stain resistant, and can easily be matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.* They are bonded to the tooth, providing a seamless finish, and generally restores a large portion of the tooth.*
What can I expect during my appointment?
It is most often necessary to numb the area around the tooth that needs to be filled. This is to prevent any uncomfortable feelings or even pain that may be experienced during the procedure.* Depending on the damage, we will then proceed with some or all of the following steps:
- Removing tooth decay. In cases where decay is present, its removal will be necessary. This can include drilling in order to remove all of the decay that is present, and also to properly shape the area for your new filling.*
- Etching. In the event that you are receiving a bonded filling, the tooth needing the filling will first be etched with an acid gel in order to create a surface that will best hold the filling.*
- Resin. Depending on the type of filling you receive; a resin application may be necessary. This is applied in layers, and is hardened using light. This light strengthens the resin, making it dense and durable.*
- Tooth Polish. After each filling that is done, we will then polish the filling and the surrounding tooth to ensure the surface is even and blended.*
