Crowns + Bridges
What are crowns and bridges?
Due to damaged or missing teeth, crowns or bridges may be necessary. In instances of missing teeth, a dental bridge can be used to replace the missing teeth, making activities such as eating and talking easier.* Even one missing tooth can cause your remaining teeth to drift. It is imperative to replace any missing teeth right away, as it can also lead to the loosening of surrounding teeth.
In the case of a damaged tooth, a crown may be necessary to restore not only the look of the tooth, but to restore its proper function, as well. Crowns are a perfect way to close gaps between teeth which can be embarrassing and can sometimes lead to a misaligned bite, which can also lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.*
How can crowns help me?
Crowns are needed for bridges, but are also used independently. Crowns are made from different materials such as metal alloys, porcelain, ceramics, composite resin, or combinations of these materials. It all depends on your specific needs. Crowns are also color matched to blend in more naturally with your existing teeth.*
Crowns are used in several situations:
- If you have a cavity that is simply too large for a filling, a crown can be beneficial.*
- If you have a missing tooth and are in need of a bridge, crowns can provide strong replacement teeth.*
- If you need to cover a dental implant, a crown is your best option.*
- If you have a damaged tooth, a crown can restore and strengthen your tooth.*
- If you have had root canal, a crown is used to protect and strengthen your newly restored tooth.*
How can bridges help me?
There are several types of bridges, ranging from fixed bridge placements to implant-supported bridges. Depending on the specifics of your needs, we will discuss your options and provide you with the best care possible.
Essentially, the teeth on either side of your missing tooth will be prepared. We will then place a bridge of crowns over the two prepared teeth, which includes the “missing” tooth, and is cemented into place. This ensures your bite returns to normal, preserving your facial structure and ability to eat normally.*
If you are missing several teeth in a row, an implant-supported bridge may be necessary. These do not need support from the surrounding teeth, but rely on your jawbone for support. These bridges are implanted directly into the jaw bone which allows maximum security.*
